Real Player won't play WMV file and references Windows Media player
I try to play a video from a respected company and I get error message:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the required video codec is not installed on your computer.
I got Real Player is it really Windows Media Player? What "codex" is needed and where do I get it. I thought Real Player was the real deal.

We wouldn't know much about Windows Media Player and therefore can't comment on it. Most video files contain audio and video components built into it. If a particular component is not compatible with a media player, you will run into this issue. That said, do you know what the file format of this particular video is?
Alternately, installing the K-Lite codec pack often helps to fix issues related to playback. You can install it from the link below:

After installing the codec, restart your computer and try playing the videos again.

Thanks for the note. Other than it has an WMV extension I know nothing.
As to why Realplayer would signal a Windows Media Player error message is beyond me.
I will check out the link you provided. That seems to be what I am looking for.

That is highly impossible for RealPlayer to give a Windows Media player message. To ensure you are opening up that particular video in RealPlayer, simply right click the video and choose Open With and select RealPlayer.
