now when i put in a new dvd it says there is something on it and to erase it in doing that get general error occurred there is nothing on dvds when checked advised what is problem

  If the DVD is incorrectly saying that something is on the disk when the disk is empty means that something is wrong with your DVD burn/read lens. You can do one more thing to confirm if the problem is with your DVD drive or something else.

  • Go to My PC
  • Right click on your DVD Drive icon
  • Click "Erase this disc".

  If Windows is able to erase the disc, then please reinstall RealPlayer.
